Congratulations to the Coorong District Council from the Heart Foundation!
After years of reshaping its focus on healthy habits, the Coorong District Council has been awarded the 2017 Heart Foundation South Australia Local Government Award for councils with populations less than 10,000.
One of the stand-out initiatives was a strategic infrastructure program driven by the local Obesity Prevention and Lifestyle Program (OPAL) which has focused on developing facilities in all townships.
The biggest challenge faced in remote communities of the Coorong (the State’s largest geographical LGA) is access. With this in mind, OPAL (in partnership with Council’s infrastructure team) set about creating environmental changes, which could be accessed within a 20-minute drive by all families.
This initiative has dramatically improved opportunities for incidental and purposeful active recreation for all demographics, including walking/cycling trails, sports facilities, mobile skate ramp and new playgrounds.
Council has also supported mental health initiatives, including a Suicide Prevention Network, Tintinara Community Men’s Shed and Annual Mayor’s Pedometer Challenge.
