Adelaide Road Gateway Project
The Rural City of Murray Bridge was seeking to revitalise, activate and transform key township entrances to create a journey to the town centre and riverfront to create a sense of arrival to Murray Bridge. The Adelaide Road Gateway project re-imagined an existing road reserve to a usable linear open space which incorporated a meandering pathway, seating, tables, shade, BBQ's, lighting, play spaces, toilets and landscaping as well as the truck driver's memorial. Developed in consultation with the community it has become a well-used space and created an inviting entry to Murray Bridge and an appealing outlook for the residents and businesses along Adelaide Road.
Project details
The Adelaide Road Linear Park has become a recreation and open space destination through providing a shared use path, improved landscape amenity and public art. It has also created opportunities for outdoor seating and socialising and enhanced and promoted the historical features through way finding and interpretation and integrated community based public art elements.
Significant landscaping has been undertaken including 3,560m2 of open grassed play space supported by 3,800 plantings, all irrigated via Council's storm water harvesting and reuse scheme.
The project has also improved vehicular movements and parking adjacent the site and provided increased connectivity for walking and cycling. It's a visually attractive entry to the City

Health value
Through the development of the shared path, it has created a new opportunity to be active through walking and cycling. Being DDA compliant has also ensured that it is accessible for all and has improved safety at intersections and connectivity to adjoining streets and businesses. Increased seating opportunities and shelters throughout the linear park enables rest points and areas to socialise. The retention of existing large trees, new landscaping and grass areas has dramatically improved the amenity of the area and made it a pleasant and attractive place to be thereby encouraging people to get outdoors.
Economic value
The linear park has dramatically enhanced the entrance to the township of Murray Bridge and created a real sense of arrival. With housing on one side and businesses on the other it has provided an improved outlook and amenity for all property owners.

- Conservatively $2.33M in additional economic return annually once completed and an additional 18 jobs through the direct connection to retail outlets located adjacent to the linear parklands.
Social value
The development of the linear park has seen an activation of the area with people of all ages walking their dogs or riding bikes in a safe and pleasant environment. It also offers opportunity for socialisation and engagement with others not only through being active but the ability to utilise the seating, barbeques, shelters and amenities for more formal gatherings.
The redevelopment has also enabled the area of the truck memorial to be enhanced making it a pleasant place to remember and reflect. The memorial along with other key art pieces within the reserve assist in enhancing the social fabric and sense of place.
The project also engaged with local school students to assist in some of the planting stages which not only provides a sense of ownership but also formed part of their studies. The linear park has delivered an urban design outcome which encourages place making, socialisation and activation while improving accessibility and safe opportunities walking, cycling and wheeling.
