City of Melbourne,

The Birrarung Marr precinct is the first completed stage of Melbourne's Greenline Project, transforming the northern bank of the Birrarung (Yarra River) into a connected network of public spaces. The project delivers more than 450 metres of revitalised riverfront including new promenades, boardwalks, native landscaping, shaded gathering areas and public amenities.

Draffin Street Furniture manufactured and supplied a suite of proprietary City of Melbourne furniture designs that support public use and active recreation. Integrated seating and gathering spaces encourage walking, rest, social interaction and connection with nature while providing durable, accessible infrastructure for long-term community benefit.
Although it is unknown to Draffin if the project was not directly developed using Healthy Active by Design resources, its outcomes strongly align with HAbD principles.

The City of Melbourne's Greenline Project was developed and shaped using core urban planning, active transport, and open-space principles that closely align with frameworks like Healthy Active by Design.

The revitalised waterfront prioritises walkability, access to public open space, opportunities for social interaction, connection to nature and comfortable places to rest. The integration of durable, accessible furniture supports people of varying ages and abilities and encourages longer, more active use of the public realm

Health value
The project promotes physical activity by creating an attractive and accessible riverfront environment that encourages walking, recreation and time spent outdoors. Regular seating and shaded rest areas support users of different ages and abilities, improving access to healthy active living opportunities.
Economic value
Investment in durable public infrastructure supports long-term asset performance and reduced maintenance costs. The revitalised waterfront increases visitation, strengthens Melbourne's public realm and contributes to economic activity associated with tourism, recreation and city activation.
Social value
The project creates inclusive public spaces where people can meet, gather, rest and connect. High-quality public furniture and landscaping transform the riverfront into a destination that fosters community interaction, social cohesion and a stronger connection between people and place.
Use value
The furniture supports a range of activities including resting, socialising, waterfront observation and passive recreation. Positioned throughout the precinct, it improves comfort and accessibility, helping more people enjoy the riverfront for longer periods and encouraging repeat visitation.
